Description

The 1873 Proof Dollar Pattern - J-1298 is a proof dollar pattern struck at the Philadelphia Mint, part of the Trade Dollar Era Patterns (1871-1873) series. Its obverse shows Liberty seated facing left with a liberty cap on a pole in her right hand and her left hand on a globe inscribed LIBERTY, with two short plow handles and a small wheat sheaf behind the globe, cotton bales before her and the sea in the distance. Its reverse is William Barber's eagle standing on a shield with E PLURIBUS UNUM on a ribbon, as on J-1223 and J-1285. It is one of the six designs that the Mint sold in sets of trade dollar patterns for $30; Edward Cogan's December 1878 sale catalogue mentions 60 sets sold. Two examples are confirmed in white metal. USPatterns.com notes that many of the white metal trade dollar patterns came from the collection of Mint Director Henry Linderman and may have been struck for his own cabinet. It is struck in white metal with a plain edge. USPatterns.com rates it R-8. It is also catalogued as Pollock-1440, Adams-Woodin 1321 and Taxay EP941. Cataloged as PCGS #61583.
