Description
The 1873 Proof Dollar Pattern - J-1296 is a proof dollar pattern struck at the Philadelphia Mint, part of the Trade Dollar Era Patterns (1871-1873) series. Its obverse shows Liberty seated facing left with a liberty cap on a pole in her right hand and her left hand on a globe inscribed LIBERTY, with two short plow handles and a small wheat sheaf behind the globe, cotton bales before her and the sea in the distance. Its reverse is William Barber's eagle standing on a shield with E PLURIBUS UNUM on a ribbon, as on J-1223 and J-1285. It is one of the six designs that the Mint sold in sets of trade dollar patterns for $30; Edward Cogan's December 1878 sale catalogue mentions 60 sets sold. USPatterns.com regards this plain-edge copper listing as unconfirmed and unlikely to exist. Judd lists it in copper with a plain edge. It is also catalogued as Pollock-1438, Adams-Woodin 1319 and Taxay EP939. Cataloged as PCGS #61581.
