Description
The 1873 Proof Dollar Pattern - J-1284 is a proof dollar pattern struck at the Philadelphia Mint, part of the Trade Dollar Era Patterns (1871-1873) series. Its obverse is J. A. Bailly's Liberty head facing left, crowned with leaves and with the hair braided and coiled behind, and its reverse William Barber's eagle standing on a shield with E PLURIBUS UNUM in the field above. It is one of the six designs that the Mint sold in sets of trade dollar patterns for $30; Edward Cogan's December 1878 sale catalogue mentions 60 sets sold. One example is traced in aluminum, ex Farouk; USPatterns.com notes that this is the only set design not known in white metal. It is struck in aluminum with a reeded edge. USPatterns.com rates it R-8. It is also catalogued as Pollock-1426, Adams-Woodin 1305 and Taxay EP930. Cataloged as PCGS #61569.
