Description
The 1873 Proof Dollar Pattern - J-1280 is a proof dollar pattern struck at the Philadelphia Mint, part of the Trade Dollar Era Patterns (1871-1873) series. Its obverse, by William Barber, is a Liberty head facing left in a coronet inscribed LIBERTY, with the hair tied in a knot and bound with pearls, and its reverse is the wreath die reading TRADE DOLLAR first used on J-1220. It is one of the six designs that the Mint sold in sets of trade dollar patterns for $30; Edward Cogan's December 1878 sale catalogue mentions 60 sets sold. Two examples are known in white metal. USPatterns.com notes that many of the white metal trade dollar patterns came from the collection of Mint Director Henry Linderman and may have been struck for his own cabinet. It is struck in white metal with a plain edge. USPatterns.com rates it R-8. It is also catalogued as Pollock-1422, Adams-Woodin 1301 and Taxay EP926. Cataloged as PCGS #61565.
