The 1873 Cent Patterns page groups the one-cent pieces dated 1873 in the Trade Dollar Era Patterns (1871-1873) series, struck at the Philadelphia Mint from the regular Indian Head cent dies in copper, aluminum and nickel (J-1255 to J-1257). USPatterns.com reports that the Mint again struck complete sets from the regular dies of every denomination in copper and aluminum for sale to collectors. USPatterns.com believes the nickel piece, known as a business strike, to be a mint error.
