1873 Proof Cent Pattern - J-1255
Strike TypeCoin Details
Description
Opening the climactic 1873 pattern program, J-1255 features the Indian Head obverse and oak wreath reverse in the standard silver alloy. The Coinage Act of February 12, 1873 had been signed into law by the time many of this year's patterns were produced, fundamentally altering the context of the entire program. The 1873 cent patterns document the first year under the new monetary regime that abolished the standard silver dollar and established the Trade Dollar as its replacement.
