The 1873 Proof Cent Pattern - J-1257 is a proof cent pattern struck at the Philadelphia Mint, part of the Trade Dollar Era Patterns (1871-1873) series. It was struck from the regular 1873 Indian Head cent dies. The example USPatterns.com illustrates is a business strike, not a proof, and it believes the piece to be a mint error struck on a planchet meant for another coin or cut from nickel stock. NGC lists this number only on the Mint State scale, and the Mint State listing (PCGS #71542) has its own page, 1873 Cent Pattern - J-1257. It is struck in nickel with a plain edge. USPatterns.com rates it R-8. It is also catalogued as Pollock-1398. Cataloged as PCGS #61542.
