The 1872 Proof Double Eagle Pattern - J-1254 is a proof double eagle pattern struck at the Philadelphia Mint, part of the Trade Dollar Era Patterns (1871-1873) series. It was struck from the regular 1872 double eagle dies. USPatterns.com regards the 1872 copper and aluminum strikings from regular dies as pieces made for sale to collectors in complete sets, cent through double eagle. Two are believed to have been struck in aluminum, as for the other gold denominations. It is struck in aluminum with a reeded edge. USPatterns.com rates it R-8. It is also catalogued as Pollock-1396 and Adams-Woodin 1213. Cataloged as PCGS #61526.
