Description
A copper-nickel rendering of the double eagle design, J-1253 tests the base-metal alloy at the highest regular denomination. The silvery copper-nickel composition at the double eagle diameter creates a coin-like object that resembles the silver dollar more than the golden $20 piece, despite sharing the latter's design. This composition experiment was purely theoretical, as no serious proposal existed to convert the double eagle from gold to base metal.
