The 1872 Proof Double Eagle Pattern - J-1253 is a proof double eagle pattern struck at the Philadelphia Mint, part of the Trade Dollar Era Patterns (1871-1873) series. It was struck from the regular 1872 double eagle dies. USPatterns.com regards the 1872 copper and aluminum strikings from regular dies as pieces made for sale to collectors in complete sets, cent through double eagle. Two examples are confirmed in copper. NGC's census lists this number only as gilt. It is struck in copper with a reeded edge. USPatterns.com rates it R-7. It is also catalogued as Pollock-1395 and Adams-Woodin 1212. Cataloged as PCGS #61525.
