Description
The 1872 Proof Double Eagle Pattern - J-1251 is a proof double eagle pattern struck at the Philadelphia Mint, part of the Trade Dollar Era Patterns (1871-1873) series. Its obverse is William Barber's Liberty head facing left, with LIBERTY on the headband and the hair falling behind, and its reverse an eagle standing on a shield like that of his Amazonian silver patterns, which is why the set is also called Amazonian; USPatterns.com notes that it is the only uniform design ever made for all six gold denominations. USPatterns.com reports a single set struck in gold, about a dozen sets in copper (three of them apparently gilt) and three in aluminum. Ten examples are confirmed in copper; USPatterns.com notes that three of the copper sets appear to be gilt. It is struck in copper with a reeded edge. USPatterns.com rates it R-6. It is also catalogued as Pollock-1393, Adams-Woodin 1211 and Taxay EP896. Cataloged as PCGS #61523.
