$43,200 PR64 02-25-2021 Heritage Auctions
Description
A gilt copper version of the conventional Liberty Head double eagle, this pattern recreates the golden appearance of the $20 coin through gold plating over a copper base. Unlike the Amazonian gilt variant at J-1251, this piece uses the standard Liberty Head design, making it a more conservative approach to producing a gold-looking double eagle pattern without the expense of actual gold. The gilding gives the established design its intended golden character.
Rarity Notes
R-7 to R-8. Very rare, approximately 3-8 examples survive.
