The 1872 Cent Patterns page groups the one-cent pieces dated 1872 in the Trade Dollar Era Patterns (1871-1873) series, struck at the Philadelphia Mint from the regular Indian Head cent dies in copper, aluminum, copper-nickel and nickel (J-1179 to J-1182). USPatterns.com reports that the Mint struck complete sets from the regular dies of every denomination, cent through double eagle, in copper and aluminum for sale to collectors. USPatterns.com suggests that the copper-nickel and nickel pieces may be mint errors.
