1872 Proof Cent Pattern - J-1182
Strike TypeCoin Details
Description
A copper-nickel striking of the Indian Head cent, J-1182 tests the alloy that had proved successful for the five-cent denomination at the one-cent level. Copper-nickel cent experiments carried particular practical relevance because the existing bronze cent was susceptible to wear and discoloration, problems that the harder copper-nickel alloy might address. This pattern foreshadows the copper-nickel clad compositions that would eventually dominate American coinage a century later.
