Description
Closing the sixteen-entry 1871 dime pattern series, J-1089 was struck in copper-nickel, adding a fourth composition to the design variants explored during this year. Copper-nickel dime patterns are relatively unusual in the Trade Dollar era because the dime was firmly established as a silver-alloy denomination, but testing in this alloy acknowledged the growing role of copper-nickel in American coinage. The piece rounds out one of the most comprehensive single-year dime pattern programs in Mint history.
