Spanning a substantial arc from 8:30 to 11:00 on the reverse — nearly a quarter of the die rim — this pre-cud on an 1871 Indian Head Cent documents an extended die crack that had not yet progressed to full separation. A pre-cud represents the intermediate stage of rim failure: the die has fractured along the rim, but the broken piece remains attached, producing a visible crack line on struck coins rather than the raised featureless mass characteristic of a complete cud. The length of this crack, covering roughly 75 degrees of the reverse rim, indicates advanced die fatigue and suggests that continued use would have resulted in a dramatic full cud. James Longacre's Indian Head Cent, struck in bronze (95% copper and 5% tin/zinc) from 1864 onward after the earlier copper-nickel composition of 1859-1863, was produced at the Philadelphia Mint through 1909.
