Description

This 1871 Indian Head cent displays a pre-cud die crack on the reverse, running from approximately 3:30 to 5:30 on the clock face. The crack passes through the wreath, arrows, and ribbon on the lower right portion of the reverse. A pre-cud is a significant die crack at the rim that has not yet progressed to a full cud (a raised, featureless area where a piece of the die has broken away). This specimen captures an intermediate stage of die deterioration that would eventually develop into a retained cud or full cud break.
