1870 Proof Three Cent Pattern - J-804
Strike TypeCoin Details
Description
Returning to the Seated Liberty trime design family, J-804 pairs the familiar seated figure obverse with a Roman numeral III reverse. Struck in the standard silver alloy, this pattern bridges two design traditions: the Seated Liberty motif originated by Christian Gobrecht in the 1830s and the Roman numeral denomination display common to three-cent patterns. This combination tested whether the established trime obverse could be successfully married to a different reverse type under Linderman's proposed alloy, yielding a hybrid that honored tradition while incorporating new elements.
