The 1870 Proof Three Cent Pattern - J-794 is a proof three-cent pattern struck at the Philadelphia Mint, part of the Standard Silver Patterns (1870) series. It was struck from the regular 1870 nickel three-cent dies. USPatterns.com regards the 1870 off-metal strikings from regular dies as pieces made for sale to collectors in complete sets, cent through double eagle, rather than true die trials. About a half dozen are known in copper. It is struck in copper with a plain edge. USPatterns.com rates it R-7. It is also catalogued as Pollock-881 and Adams-Woodin 1066. Cataloged as PCGS #61037.
