Description
The 1870 Proof Three Cent Pattern - J-797 is a proof three-cent pattern struck at the Philadelphia Mint, part of the Standard Silver Patterns (1870) series. Its obverse is William Barber's new seated Liberty of 1870, facing left with her right hand on a shield crossed by a LIBERTY scroll, an olive branch in her left hand and a pole and cap behind her, with UNITED STATES OF AMERICA around and the date below. Its reverse is the regular 1870 silver three-cent die. USPatterns.com reports that these pieces were sold in complete sets. Just over a half dozen are known in silver, many apparently on half dime planchets. It is struck in silver with a reeded edge. USPatterns.com rates it R-7. It is also catalogued as Pollock-884, Adams-Woodin 1058 and Taxay EP632. Cataloged as PCGS #61040.
