The 1870 Proof Three Cent Pattern - J-803 is a proof three-cent pattern struck at the Philadelphia Mint, part of the Standard Silver Patterns (1870) series. It was struck from the regular 1870 silver three-cent dies. USPatterns.com regards the 1870 off-metal strikings from regular dies as pieces made for sale to collectors in complete sets, cent through double eagle, rather than true die trials. Two or three are believed known in aluminum. It is struck in aluminum with a plain edge. USPatterns.com rates it R-8. It is also catalogued as Pollock-890 and Adams-Woodin 1064.
