1870 Proof Three Cent Pattern - J-801
Strike Type
Coin Details
Description
Translating the small Liberty Head obverse and open wreath III reverse of J-800 into the experimental standard silver alloy, J-801 sits at the heart of Linderman's metallurgical proposal. Where J-800 demonstrated the design in traditional silver, this companion piece showed how the same dies performed in the lower-fineness alloy that Linderman argued would reduce production costs while maintaining public confidence. Side-by-side comparison of J-800 and J-801 would have revealed any color or luster differences between the two silver compositions.
