Description

The seventh and final three-cent pattern variety for 1869, this proof piece concludes the Reconstruction-era experimental program for the denomination. J-682 marks the end of four years of three-cent pattern production spanning 1866-1869 that produced approximately twenty-five varieties, creating an extensive design archive for one of the newer denominations in the American series. The Liberty Head three-cent nickel would continue with its adopted design through 1889, making these the last major experimental studies the denomination would receive.
