Description
This proof three-cent pattern from 1869 begins a seven-variety series for the nickel three-cent denomination under William Barber's new leadership. The three-cent nickel was one of the more resilient Reconstruction-era denominations, and its continued popularity for postage stamp purchases ensured ongoing Mint interest in design optimization. Barber's approach to the three-cent patterns differed from Longacre's, bringing a fresh perspective to the Liberty Head obverse and Roman numeral III reverse that had served since 1865.
