1869 Proof Nickel Pattern - J-690a
Strike TypeCoin Details
Description
A compositional variant of J-690, this proof nickel pattern was struck on an alternative planchet as indicated by the "a" suffix. This piece represents one of the final metallurgical experiments in the Reconstruction-era Shield nickel pattern program. The suffix variant provides a last comparison point between the adopted copper-nickel composition and whatever alternative metal was used for this piece, closing out four years of systematic alloy testing that had accompanied the design experimentation.
