Strike TypeCoin Details
Auction Record
$10,450 PR63 03-06-1997 Bowers & Merena
Description
A compositional variant of J-686, this proof nickel pattern was struck on an alternative planchet as indicated by the "a" suffix. Despite the Shield nickel's well-established 75/25 copper-nickel composition, the Mint continued to explore metallurgical alternatives through suffix varieties. These experiments tested different alloy ratios, alternative metals, or modified planchet preparation techniques that could improve striking quality or reduce production costs for the high-demand denomination.
