1869 Proof Nickel Pattern - J-690
Strike TypeCoin Details
Description
One of the final proof nickel pattern varieties for 1869, this piece is among the last entries in the main J-number sequence for the year. The Shield nickel's experimental program was winding down after four intensive years of pattern production that had generated over sixty varieties. By 1869, the fundamental design questions had been answered, the alloy composition was settled, and the No Rays reverse had proven its durability in mass production. These closing patterns addressed only minor refinements.
