Description
The 1869 Proof Nickel Pattern - J-689 is a proof five-cent pattern struck at the Philadelphia Mint, part of the Reconstruction Era Patterns (1866-1869) series. It was struck from the regular 1869 Shield nickel dies. USPatterns.com regards the 1869 off-metal strikings from regular dies as pieces made for sale to collectors in complete sets. The single known example is magnetic; the aluminum and steel pieces of this year used the over-polished reverse die of the 1865 pattern J-418. It is struck in steel or pure nickel with a plain edge. USPatterns.com lists it as unique. It is also catalogued as Pollock-770 and Adams-Woodin 805. Cataloged as PCGS #60914.
