Description
The 1869 Proof Half Dollar Pattern - J-759a is a proof half dollar pattern struck at the Philadelphia Mint, part of the Reconstruction Era Patterns (1866-1869) series. It is one of the three Standard Silver designs of 1869, lighter coins proposed for redeeming fractional currency notes, which the Mint sold to collectors in sets for $15. On this design Liberty wears a band with a star; the reverse reads STANDARD SILVER above the denomination in a wreath, with the date below. The single brass example is ex Kosoff, Evans and Simpson. It is struck in brass with a reeded edge. USPatterns.com lists it as unique. It is also catalogued as Pollock-844. Cataloged as PCGS #60990.
