Description
A second main proof half dollar pattern variety for 1869, continuing the ambitious program for the fifty-cent denomination. The half dollar had traditionally been one of the most important coins in American commerce, serving as the primary silver coin for larger retail transactions. Its design needed to project authority and permanence while accommodating the IN GOD WE TRUST motto and denomination information. J-743 features design elements that distinguish it from the opening variety.
