Description

This proof half dollar pattern is the third variety in the extensive 1869 series. The half dollar's substantial diameter and weight made it an ideal denomination for showcasing the Mint's artistic capabilities, and Barber took full advantage of this opportunity in the 1869 program. The larger canvas allowed for more elaborate portrait work, detailed heraldic elements, and more complex compositional arrangements than were possible on the smaller silver denominations.
