Description

A compositional variant of J-742, struck on an alternative planchet as indicated by the "a" suffix. Testing the opening design concept on multiple metals from the beginning of the series indicates that Barber was interested in both design and compositional alternatives for the half dollar. The half dollar's substantial size and weight made it particularly sensitive to planchet composition, as different metals could significantly alter the coin's heft and tactile qualities.
