This proof half dollar pattern continues the extensive 1869 program with its seventh main variety. The twenty-one variety half dollar series was being produced simultaneously with equally large dime and quarter programs, making 1869 one of the most experimentally productive years in the history of the Philadelphia Mint. The combined output of over seventy silver denomination pattern varieties in a single year is unprecedented in American numismatic history.
