Description
This proof half dollar pattern advances the 1869 program to its fifth main variety. The half dollar was second only to the silver dollar in prestige among American silver coins, and its design carried significant symbolic weight. Each pattern variety tested how effectively a proposed design communicated the values and identity of the post-Civil War nation, from patriotic imagery to the IN GOD WE TRUST motto that had become a defining feature of the Reconstruction era coinage.
