Description
The 1869 Proof Half Dollar Pattern - J-745a is a proof half dollar pattern struck at the Philadelphia Mint, part of the Reconstruction Era Patterns (1866-1869) series. It is one of the three Standard Silver designs of 1869, lighter coins proposed for redeeming fractional currency notes, which the Mint sold to collectors in sets for $15. On this design Liberty wears a cap with two stars; the reverse reads STANDARD SILVER above the denomination in a wreath, with the date below. The single brass example was offered in 1988 and later graded by PCGS. It is struck in brass with a reeded edge. USPatterns.com lists it as unique. It is also catalogued as Pollock-827. Cataloged as PCGS #12169.
