Description

This proof cent pattern from 1869 was produced during the first year of William Barber's tenure as Chief Engraver, following James B. Longacre's death on January 1, 1869. Barber was officially appointed on January 18, 1869, inheriting both Longacre's ongoing projects and the extensive pattern-making tradition of the Reconstruction era. J-666 begins a six-variety cent pattern series that reflects the new Chief Engraver's approach to the Indian Head design. The continuation of the Indian Head motif on experimental cent dies indicates that Barber saw no immediate need to redesign the denomination, though he explored refinements consistent with his own artistic sensibilities.
