Description
The business strike counterpart to the proof J-669 cent pattern, this piece demonstrates how the design would appear under standard production conditions. Business strike patterns from William Barber's first year as Chief Engraver are particularly interesting because they show how the new engraver's die preparation techniques performed under realistic striking parameters. The bronze Indian Head cent planchet required specific die treatment for optimal results, and subtle differences in die finishing could produce noticeably different business strike results compared to Longacre's approach.
