Struck at the Philadelphia Mint in the inaugural year of the Reconstruction Era Patterns series, these 1866 quarter pieces represent the beginning of the most prolific pattern production period in Mint history. The Civil War had ended just one year earlier, and the monetary system required fundamental restructuring: specie payments were suspended, silver and gold coins had vanished, and new compositions were urgently needed. The patterns tested experimental designs including alternative compositions in nickel and aluminum to address chronic coinage shortages. The obverse explores departures from the Seated Liberty design, while some reverses incorporate the newly mandated IN GOD WE TRUST motto added by the Act of March 3, 1865. A notable auction result of $12K in PR64 at Stack's confirms collector appreciation.
