1866 Proof Quarter Pattern - J-536
Strike Type
Coin Details
Description
This proof quarter pattern demonstrates the proposed placement of IN GOD WE TRUST on the Seated Liberty quarter dollar. The larger canvas of the quarter, at roughly 24.3mm in diameter, afforded more space for motto integration compared to the dime. The obverse carries the standard Seated Liberty design with thirteen stars, while the reverse features the heraldic eagle with the motto on a ribbon above. Chief Engraver Longacre prepared these pattern dies to satisfy the Congressional mandate that all United States coins of sufficient size bear the national motto. The Seated Liberty quarter had circulated without a motto since its introduction in 1838, and this pattern documents the transition to the WITH MOTTO type that would continue through the end of the series in 1891.
