Description
The earliest Judd number assigned to the 1866 cent patterns, this proof striking showcases the proposed addition of IN GOD WE TRUST to the Indian Head cent. Struck with mirror-like fields characteristic of proof production, this piece demonstrates the Mint's highest-quality striking capabilities applied to the experimental motto design. The obverse features Longacre's iconic Indian Head portrait with its distinctive feathered headdress, while the reverse integrates the motto into the existing oak wreath and shield composition. As the first of three 1866 cent pattern varieties cataloged by Judd, J-455 represents the initial die preparation, with subsequent numbers reflecting refinements to the motto placement or alternative compositions. The proof format indicates these were deliberately produced for examination by Mint officials and members of Congress who had mandated the motto change.
