Description
The 1866 Cent Pattern - J-456 is a cent pattern struck at the Philadelphia Mint, part of the Reconstruction Era Patterns (1866-1869) series. It was struck from the regular 1866 Indian Head cent dies, so its design matches the regular coin; only the metal differs. Judd lists it in copper-nickel with a plain edge, and USPatterns.com rates it R-6. Judd classes it as a die trial, a strike from regular dies in a metal other than the coin's own. USPatterns.com notes that pieces on 72-grain planchets may have been struck on leftover copper-nickel cent stock of 1857-1864, and records close to 20 in proof and business strike form.
