Description

This business strike 1866 cent pattern features a modified arrangement of the Indian Head design with IN GOD WE TRUST integrated into the reverse. Distinguished from J-456 by its composition or minor die variation, this pattern was part of the extensive 1866 testing program that accompanied the Congressional motto mandate. James B. Longacre, who had designed the Indian Head cent seven years earlier, prepared these experimental dies to evaluate how the motto text would wear in circulation. The Indian Head obverse shows Liberty wearing a feathered headdress with UNITED STATES OF AMERICA around the border, while the reverse displays a wreath enclosing ONE CENT with the motto positioned above. The existence of multiple Judd varieties for the 1866 cent pattern reflects the Mint's careful approach to modifying an established and popular coin design.
