Description

A proof impression of the Judd-456 Indian Head cent pattern, struck to demonstrate the proposed IN GOD WE TRUST motto placement for the one-cent denomination. The carefully polished dies and slow, deliberate striking process produced exceptionally sharp detail that allowed Mint Director James Pollock and Chief Engraver Longacre to evaluate the design's aesthetic qualities under optimal conditions. The obverse retains the standard Indian Head motif that had circulated since 1859, while the reverse bears the motto that Congress required on all sufficiently large coins through the Act of March 3, 1865. These proof patterns were distributed to collectors and officials as specimens of the forthcoming design change, which would be implemented on regular-issue cents in subsequent years.
