About This Coin
From the final year of the Civil War Patterns (1860-1865), the 1865 Two Cent Patterns were produced at the Philadelphia Mint. The regular two-cent piece, in its second year, at first proved popular but soon faded from circulation. The obverse features the shield design with the motto banner that designer James Barton Longacre introduced the previous year, while the reverse displays a wreath enclosing 2 CENTS. The 1865 pieces are strikings of the regular dies in other metals, including one on a rolled planchet of silver and copper said to come from Michigan ore. This group holds the pages for J-407, J-408, J-409 and J-409a.
