Description

Cataloged as Judd-408, this proof two-cent pattern is a regular dies trial piece struck in copper with a plain edge. The obverse and reverse both employ the standard 1865 two-cent piece dies designed by James B. Longacre, featuring the shield bearing IN GOD WE TRUST on the obverse and the wheat wreath surrounding the denomination on the reverse. As a die trial in copper, this piece served to test the production dies in a material softer than the standard bronze alloy of the regular issue. Copper die trials were sometimes made to verify die quality before or during a production run, and they were also produced specifically for collectors who sought off-metal varieties for their cabinets.
