About This Coin

The 1860 Double Eagle Patterns is a United States Gold Double Eagle from the Civil War Patterns (1860-1865) series. The obverse features experimental designs reflecting wartime themes including patriotic motifs and alternative compositions, while the reverse displays various experimental designs. Designed by James Barton Longacre and other Mint engravers. Civil War Patterns (1860-1865) were created during one of the most turbulent periods in American history. As the war disrupted coin supply and caused widespread hoarding, the Mint experimented with alternative compositions (including paper, rubber, and various base metals) and new designs to address the currency crisis. These patterns document the Mint's response to wartime economic disruption. Many feature unique or transitional designs not seen on regular coinage.
