Description
Judd-407, Pollock-477, is one of the most metallurgically distinctive patterns in the entire 1865 series. Struck from the regular two-cent piece dies, this experimental trial used native Michigan copper ore that naturally contained veins of silver. The resulting planchet displays visible streaks and inclusions of silver running through the copper matrix, giving each surviving example a unique appearance. The raw, unrefined character of the native ore produced planchets with inherent imperfections, and surviving examples typically show cracks and laminations on both sides caused by the heterogeneous metal structure. The obverse carries the familiar IN GOD WE TRUST shield motif adopted for the two-cent piece in 1864, and the reverse shows the wheat wreath encircling the denomination.
Rarity Notes
High Rarity-7. Approximately 12 specimens known. Native Michigan ore composition with visible silver streaks makes each example unique. Values in the $3,300-$6,000 range.
