Description
Judd-431, Pollock-502, is the third 1865 proof half dollar motto pattern and is notable for being struck in aluminum, making it one of the most unusual patterns in the entire Civil War series. Aluminum was still a precious metal in 1865, more expensive than silver, and the use of this exotic material for a half dollar pattern demonstrates the Mint's continued interest in aluminum as a potential coinage metal. The lightweight aluminum planchet gives this pattern a dramatically different feel from a standard silver half dollar, weighing only a fraction as much. This unique aluminum half dollar is one of the most remarkable pieces in the Civil War pattern series.
Rarity Notes
Unique or nearly so. The aluminum composition makes this one of the most remarkable Civil War patterns. Aluminum was more valuable than silver in 1865.
