Description

Judd-432, Pollock-505, is an off-metal die trial of the regular 1865 Liberty Seated half dollar, struck in copper with a reeded edge using the same production dies used for circulating coinage that year. Unlike most patterns that test new designs, J-432 uses unaltered regular-issue dies, making it a die trial rather than a design pattern; the only anticipated change at this time was the upcoming addition of IN GOD WE TRUST to the reverse, enacted in 1866. Researchers note that pieces like this were often produced by Mint employees for sale to collectors, a common practice of the era. USPatterns.com estimates approximately six examples survive.
