Description

Judd-453a is a compositional variant of J-453 differing in the base-metal alloy used beneath the gilt gold wash, the second alloy variant in the J-453 series. Like the base J-453 gilt, this proof-quality piece was produced during the 1865 effort to add IN GOD WE TRUST to gold coinage, allowing Treasury officials to evaluate the proposed motto on a double-eagle format without committing gold. Both J-453 gilt and J-453a gilt are exceptionally rare, with only two or three examples survive for each sub-type. The proof die preparation imparts deeply mirrored fields that make these pieces impressive even in base-metal form beneath the gilting.

Rarity Notes

R.8. Extremely rare; estimated two to three examples known.
