1865 Proof Double Eagle Pattern - J-453, Gilt
Strike TypeCoin Details
Description
Judd-453 in its gilt form is a proof double eagle pattern struck in base metal and given a gold wash to simulate the appearance of the twenty-dollar gold coin while allowing official evaluation without the cost of gold. This piece was part of the 1865 campaign to add IN GOD WE TRUST to gold coinage, and the gilting technique was standard Mint practice for presenting proposed designs to Treasury officials. On well-preserved specimens the gilt layer remains convincingly brilliant, while worn examples show the base-metal substrate beneath. Gilt patterns are among the most visually striking pieces in American numismatics.
Rarity Notes
